To update your resume, here are 14 tips that you may not have heard about …
1. Back up your qualities and strengths with real life and work experiences; show what you did, not what you were responsible for.
2. Use key words to target your industry
3. Be descriptive yet concise
4. Use effective titles
5. Use bullet points, or if you have extensive experience use short paragraphs with phrases (not sentences)
6. Start each bullet with an action verb
7. Don’t use first person pronouns.
8. Put the most important information first
9. Use a 12 point font in a standard serif font (New Times Roman, e.g.) not a san serif font such as Arial.
10. Do not include obvious information (Ex: “References available”)
11. List achievements instead of responsibilities when possible
12. Quantify information when possible (percentages, dollars, number of people, etc.)
13. Keep only relevant information
14. Have an friend who knows the rules of American English grammar, usage and punctuation do a final proofread.
