As you may know, I once managed a QA group for the software development division of one of Boston's oldest publishing houses. Yesterday I received a call from one of our oldest clients who happen to be located in the exact same space where my office was located. We got relocated from downtown Boston to Kendall Square, which is where this client's HQ is. I mentioned this to the new HR rep I spoke with yesterday and that I had been back to space a few years ago and nothing looked the same; I couldn't even identified the space where I worked.

Anyway, I like to think of them as playing "Moneyball" in the software development world. I just read the book, and recommend it because it contains lessons for our world as well as baseball. They need to fill two positions, and quickly.

1) An ERP developer. Full time, permanent employment. Comp is very generous. Wants experience with supply chain software and health care/medical records experience.

2) A Professional Services high-level consultant contractor who is also knowledgeable in ERP, supply chain, medical records and health care.

NEW Client: A private company with no debt and no VCs. Located in New Hampshire; are willing to consider candidates who want to work remote but can come to the office from time to time.

3) Web Developer

* Work across functions to solve design challenges; seek input from Product Management, Architecture, Development, and other UX / UI colleagues

* Produce the documentation and output required to support the development process, including but not limited to annotated pixel mockups and production-ready Photoshop files

* Work in tandem with UI Developers and the entire scrum team to ensure finished work meets a acceptance criteria

* Be a visionary. Advocate for design decisions that will make a difference.

* Share your knowledge

Key Responsibilities

* In collaboration other development and UX team members: research, design and document the functional task flows, screens and system behaviors that will shape how our customers accomplish complex tasks in our products

* Work across functions to solve design challenges; seek input from Product Management, Architecture, Development, and other UX / UI colleagues

* Produce the documentation required to support the development process, including but not limited to application architecture maps, user object models, task flows and annotated wireframes

* Determine when and how to perform user research and validation, and do it

* Be a visionary. Advocate for design decisions that will make a difference.

5) One of our favorite clients informed me today that they continue to seek candidates with managerial experience in the defense or homeland security realms, engineering people who have multiple technical disciplines, to focus on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem. You should have most of t: a Bachelor's degree + 10 years experience, Masters degree + 7 years experience, a degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical or other engineering discipline, in coordinating technical resources of varying disciplines to successfully complete development tasks, experience with analytical systems development and/or with government qualification processes a strong plus.

6) We would also like to talk with a senior scientist with higher degrees/background in chemistry or physics, preferably the latter, along with at least eight years' experience in research and development in the areas of atmospheric pressure ionization, ion mobility, and particle collection. Also required is a familiarity with mass spectrometry.

7) A brand new client, north of Boston, telecommuting ok, asked us to help fill ELEVEN positions, many with 6 figure comp. Let's look at your resume if you are a software engineer or architect with any combination of these technologies: J2EE/EJB, Oracle, Web Services, Architecture, Product Development, Location Services Development, or if you are a product manager with SaaS, PaaS, Geospatial, Collaboration or if you are a user interface or UX developer with JavaScript, AJAX, REST, User Interface Design and Development, Product Development experience or you have QA experience with any combination of these technologies. Good VC funding with a great product and big recent sales.

This position requires an advanced understanding of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Visual Studio, .Net and Microsoft IIS. Proficiency in PHP, JAVA, AJAX and MySQL is a plus. You will need to bring a thorough understanding of Web-based solutions using MS .NET and MS SQL Server at a minimum. Aptitude in MySQL, PHP, JAVA and AJAX technologies is a strong plus. Must have 2-4 years experience as an application developer designing, building and maintaining Web-enabled, enterprise-level software solutions. Four-year degree in computer science required and you need to be certified in MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator for SQL Server 2000) and SCSA (Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris 8). Comp is in the high 5 figures.

9) Our client in the Phillippines is still eager to hear from C++/PHP programmer candidates who would like to relocate to Southern California or Manila. What's not to like? You would make a US salary and live where things are much less expensive, a collegial working environment with opportunities for advancement. If you even remotely curious, let me send your resume to our client.

I will provide full details if you or someone you refer is interested. Updated resumes are always appreciated

Thanks, and peace.

Best regards,

Patrick Mertens

Adding on, here is one more opening - for folks with managerial experience in the defense or homeland security engineering arena. I'll provide all details if you are interested (or can pass this along to), but in essence you will manager people who have multiple technical disciplines; you will focus on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the development cycle, documenting requirements, then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete problem. You should have most of this shopping list: a Bachelor's degree + 10 years experience, Masters degree + 7 years experience, a degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical or other engineering discipline, in coordinating technical resources of varying disciplines to successfully complete development tasks, experience with analytical systems development and/or with government qualification processes a strong plus.

We also need another mechanical engineer or draftsperson for a permanent position. This is similar to the contractor position we filled a few months back. Responsibilities will include incorporating redlines into existing drawings and creating new drawings for existing prototype design. The mechanical designer will work very closely with mechanical engineers.

Ideal skill set: Solidworks 2011, Autodesk Inventor (desired), the ability to work independently and the ability to work directly with production Solidworks, new drawings from existing models, small company 30 people.

We would like to talk with a senior scientist with higher degrees/background in chemistry or physics, preferably the latter, along with at least eight years' experience in research and development in the areas of atmospheric pressure ionization, ion mobility, and particle collection. You will also need show an ability to program manage key initiatives or projects from technology roadmap, independently leap across functional team groups to accomplish goals, provide technical leadership for new trace detection methodologies leading to marketable products, design/develop/optimize existing and new technologies, participate in program efforts of key technology developments, design/develop/optimize custom analysis and control equipment and software to test and validate new technologies, be responsible for contributing to the patent portfolio of the company, be responsible for process development, process evaluation and process transfer from R&D to production, and provide guidance to junior members of technical staff and instill technical insight to all levels of the company.

Let me know if you are interested (or know someone you can refer) and I'll provide more details.

We are also on the hunt for a Senior Software Developer with a broad range of knowledge and experience with 5-10 years of experience developing embedded software for instrumentation or other commercial products, ideally in both embedded Linux and Windows environments. You will be responsible for the requirements, design, development, documentation, and testing of software for new innovative software products and existing software applications.

You will also analyze software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints, and will consult with hardware engineers and other engineering staff to evaluate interfaces between hardware and software, as well as operational and performance requirements of the overall system. You will also be involved in performing periodic code reviews and mentoring other software engineers on good software development practices.
